Geoffrey McLean, a Civil War Re-enactor, with his wife, Kimberly McLean, presented interactive talks about the Civil War to the Mooberry Division over the July 9-10, 2016 drill.

"Infernal Machines" - Mr. McLean, dressed in period naval uniform, gave an in-depth talk of submarines and submarine warfare in the Civil War. Did you know that there were at least 20 and maybe 24 or more submarines in the Civil War? Submarines served on both sides of the conflict. He also talked about the recent discovery of the existence of the USS Alligator - the true forerunner of the modern submarine. Additionally, he discussed what the US Navy and NOAA are doing to find the Alligator. He will also discuss many Southern submarines and "David" class semi-submersibles.

Submarines operated in many theaters of the war and it is fascinating to find out that two opposing submarines were in the same theater at the same time.Torpedoes terrified Union crews as did submarines. Learn how a torpedo was used from a submarine to sink the USS Housatonic. Was the USS Tecumseh sunk by torpedo or submarine?

"What did the Navy do?" - A summary of the types of missions each of the 6 squadrons, Cruisers, and 1 permanent flotilla accomplished - and they were all very different. Mr. McLean touches on the some topics such as the basic failure of the Confederate Government to listen and act upon naval officers' advice, southern life, the Anaconda Plan.

Mr. McLean is a former naval officer, serving aboard the USS Tulare (LKA-112), USS Tuscaloosa (LST-1187), CTF-73/70/77/COMNAVSURFGRU WESTPAC, and the USS Trippe (FF-1075).

The Mooberry Division sincerely thank Mr. and Mrs. McLean for their contribution to preserving history in their art.
